THURSDAY APRIL 9

Leave what to beaver?

Why 'Leave it to Beaver' When You Can Ask Your Queer Uncle? We couldn't have said it better ourselves. That's the subject of a Sarah Pettit and Margo Miller lecture (with the sub-headline "Television Comedy, Transgender Culture, and the Camp Archive, 1955–1969") sponsored by LGBT Studies At Yale, William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St., Rm. 309, New Haven; (203) 432-7737, yale.edu/lgbts. Now you may finally learn what William Frawley's role in the family really was on "My Three Sons." 5 p.m. Free. Reception to follow.

FRIDAY APRIL 10

Spin it

Miss DJ You B? We do, too. He would have been down with this bill: Richmond, Va.–based DJ Amazing Ghost shares a stage with Hartford's Kings, the weird psych-pop of If Jesus Had Machine Guns and New Haven's own Krushes. Cafe Nine, 250 State St., New Haven; (203) 789-8281, cafenine.com. 8 p.m. $3.

SATURDAY APRIL 11

Got ax, will battle

Battle of the Bands at The Space continues tonight with the semi-final, featuring a host of guitar-lovin' bands: Mike Falzone and The Peppermint Trick (Stratford; they sound exactly like Jack Johnson — decide whether that's good for yourself), Novus Dae (Bristol; poppy, thin-voiced metal), Hunting Simon (Manchester; huge, buzzing guitars, whiny-voiced lead vocals), Krispy and The Skinny Kids (Guilford; poppy but earnest punk/metal with solid lead guitar skillz and '80s metal vibe), Dr. Rocktopus and The Nunks (Guilford; an odd combination of loud rock, huge drums and horns — maybe that's why they have a song called "Unusual Anthem") and Verrazano-Narrows (thoughtful, rocking pop). The Space, 295 Treadwell St., Bldg. H, Hamden; (203) 288-6400, thespace.tk. 6:30 p.m. $10.

SUNDAY APRIL 12

In the moment

With tax day fast approaching and the country's economic status making life more and more difficult, now's the perfect time to give meditation a shot. Don't believe it helps? Get your mind and body in the same place for even a moment and see if you think differently. From 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., the New Haven Shambhala Center (85 Willow St., Bldg. B, New Haven; 203-503-0173, newhaven.shambhala.org) offers Public Meditation Practice. All are welcome and meditation instruction is available for the entire session. Free.

MONDAY APRIL 13

Freeze and burn

It's the stuff Discovery Channel shows are made of: Life at the Extremes Week begins at the Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration (55 Coogan Blvd., Mystic; 860-572-5955, mysticaquarium.org). Learn what kind of animals live in boiling seawater, which can withstand the frozen temperatures of the Arctic, and see the three visiting beluga whales at the aquarium before they leave for other destinations. There are lectures and interactive programs scheduled all week. 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Free with admission to the aquarium.

TUESDAY APRIL 14

In actuality, your family is pretty tame

Local writer and journalist Peter Eichstaedt reads from and signs his book First Kill Your Family: Child Soldiers of Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army, about Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army, which was composed of Ugandan children abducted from their families and forced into bloody conflict. Eichstaedt researched the book by touring refugee camps and villages throughout Uganda. R.J. Julia Booksellers, 768 Boston Post Rd., Madison; (203) 245-3959, rjjulia.com. 7 p.m. Free, but reserve a seat.

She's all that

So here's one of the most famous versions of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion: My Fair Lady, with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison (sadly, without "Rex Harrison hat" for most of the film), screening for free as part of Tuesday Movie Matinees at Cheshire Public Library (104 Main St., Cheshire; 203-272-2245, cheshirelib.org). 1 p.m. Free.

El cabrito permanece en el cuadro

If Audrey Hepburn singing with a cockney accent doesn't work for you, there's Hygienic's International Film Series, which features Achero Mañas' film El Bola, a Goya-winner (Spain's Oscars) about a 12-year-old boy raised in an abusive household who befriends the new kid in school. At Bean & Leaf, 13 Washington St., New London; (860) 608-6512, hygienic.org/events. 7:30 p.m. Free.

WEDNESDAY APRIL 15

What's so funny about peace?

The New Haven Peace Commission leads a public hearing tonight at the Aldermanic Chambers of City Hall (165 Church St., New Haven; 203-946-8200, cityofnewhaven.com). The forum tonight is for New Haven residents to speak about the recession and its impact on their personal and professional lives — their jobs, neighborhoods and homes. Featuring child advocate Doug Hall and sustainable living advisor Dan Olson. 7 p.m. Free.
